6-Day Marangu Route Itinerary

The Marangu Route, often called the "Coca-Cola" route, is the only Kilimanjaro route that offers hut accommodation. The 6-day option includes an extra day for acclimatization at Horombo Hut, increasing your chance of summit success.

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

  • Elevation: 1,860m to 2,700m
  • Distance: 8 km
  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Habitat: Rainforest

Begin your trek through lush rainforest. Expect to see monkeys, birds, and exotic plants. Overnight at Mandara Hut.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

  • Elevation: 2,700m to 3,720m
  • Distance: 12 km
  • Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland

Hike through moorland with views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Rest and overnight at Horombo Hut.

Day 3: Acclimatization at Horombo Hut

This extra day allows your body to acclimatize, significantly improving your chances of a successful summit. You can take a short hike toward Mawenzi Ridge for beautiful views and then return to Horombo for a second night.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

  • Elevation: 3,720m to 4,703m
  • Distance: 10 km
  • Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine desert

Cross the lunar desert between Mawenzi and Kibo. Reach Kibo Hut and rest in preparation for the summit push at midnight.

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak & down to Horombo Hut

  • Elevation: 4,703m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak) then down to 3,720m
  • Distance: 22 km total
  • Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
  • Habitat: Arctic to Moorland

Start the final ascent around midnight. Reach Uhuru Peak by sunrise, take in the incredible views, then begin the long descent back to Horombo Hut for overnight rest.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

  • Elevation: 3,720m to 1,860m
  • Distance: 20 km
  • Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland to Rainforest

Continue your descent through the rainforest to Marangu Gate, where you'll receive your summit certificate. Return transfer to your hotel is included.
