3-Day Ol Doinyo Lengai & Lake Natron Trek

Embark on an unforgettable adventure to Ol Doinyo Lengai, Tanzania’s only active volcano and one of the few carbonatite volcanoes in the world. Known as the “Mountain of God” by the Maasai, this trek is steep, raw, and rewarding. You'll also explore the beautiful and remote Lake Natron, home to flamingos, waterfalls, and vast salt flats.

Day 1: Arusha/Moshi to Lake Natron

• Drive Time: Approx. 6–8 hours
• Accommodation: Tented camp or lodge near Lake Natron

Depart from Arusha or Moshi early in the morning and travel through the Great Rift Valley toward Lake Natron. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking landscapes, Maasai villages, and wildlife sightings. Upon arrival, take a short walk to the Lake Natron shore to view flamingos, then cool off at a nearby waterfall hike. Overnight near the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai.

Day 2: Midnight Ascent to Ol Doinyo Lengai Summit

• Start Time: Around midnight
• Elevation: 1,200m to 2,962m (Summit)
• Hiking Time: 6–8 hours (ascent), 3–4 hours (descent)

Begin your climb shortly after midnight to reach the summit by sunrise. The climb is steep, dusty, and very physically demanding, but the views from the crater rim at dawn are spectacular—overlooking Lake Natron, the Rift Valley, and even Kilimanjaro on clear days. After enjoying the sunrise, descend carefully and rest at camp.

Day 3: Lake Natron Activities & Return to Arusha/Moshi

• Morning Activity: Optional short hike or Maasai cultural visit
• Drive Back: 6–8 hours to Arusha or Moshi

After a late breakfast, explore more of Lake Natron’s landscape or visit a local Maasai boma. Depart late morning or early afternoon for the return journey to Arusha or Moshi, arriving in the evening.
