6-Day Rongai Route Itinerary
The Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north. It offers a quiet, less-traveled path with excellent views and a gradual ascent profile — ideal for a quicker trek without sacrificing acclimatization.
Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
- Elevation: 2,000m to 2,625m
- Distance: 7 km
- Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
- Habitat: Montane Forest
Drive to the Rongai Gate and begin your trek through lush forest trails. The day ends at Simba Camp on the edge of the moorland zone.
Day 2: Simba Camp to Kikelelwa Camp
- Elevation: 2,625m to 3,600m
- Distance: 10 km
- Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
- Habitat: Moorland
Continue ascending across open moorland. Enjoy spectacular views of Kenya’s Amboseli plains before arriving at Kikelelwa Camp.
Day 3: Kikelelwa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Hut
- Elevation: 3,600m to 4,330m
- Distance: 6 km
- Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
A shorter but steep climb today. You'll reach the picturesque Mawenzi Tarn, nestled beneath the striking spires of Mawenzi Peak.
Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn Hut to Kibo Hut
- Elevation: 4,330m to 4,700m
- Distance: 9 km
- Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, reaching Kibo Hut. Rest early in preparation for the summit attempt at midnight.
Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, then down to Horombo Hut
- Elevation: 4,700m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak), then down to 3,720m
- Distance: 21 km
- Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
- Habitat: Arctic to Moorland
Begin your summit push just after midnight. Reach Gilman’s Point and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After photos and celebrations, descend to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest.
Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
- Elevation: 3,720m to 1,860m
- Distance: 20 km
- Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
- Habitat: Moorland to Forest
Descend steadily through the rainforest to Marangu Gate, where you'll receive your summit certificate and say farewell to the mountain.
