6-Day Umbwe Route Itinerary
The Umbwe Route is the most direct and steepest trail to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its solitude and difficulty, it offers a real challenge with stunning scenery and fewer crowds. Recommended for experienced trekkers.
Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp
- Elevation: 1,800m to 2,850m
- Distance: 11 km
- Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
- Habitat: Rainforest
The trek begins through dense montane forest on a steep trail to Umbwe Cave Camp. This section is secluded and quiet with rich flora.
Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp
- Elevation: 2,850m to 3,976m
- Distance: 6 km
- Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
- Habitat: Heath and Moorland
Steep ascent through heath zone with views of valleys and ridges. Arrive at Barranco Camp, located beneath the impressive Barranco Wall.
Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
- Elevation: 3,976m to 3,995m
- Distance: 5 km
- Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
Climb the famous Barranco Wall. The trail then undulates across ridges and valleys before reaching Karanga Camp for rest and acclimatization.
Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
- Elevation: 3,995m to 4,673m
- Distance: 4 km
- Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
A short but steep climb to Barafu Camp. You’ll rest here in preparation for the midnight summit attempt. Dinner is served early to conserve energy.
Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, then down to Mweka Camp
- Elevation: 4,673m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak), then down to 3,100m
- Distance: 17 km
- Hiking Time: 12–16 hours
- Habitat: Arctic to Rainforest
Begin your summit push at midnight. Reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise, then descend to Mweka Camp for a final overnight rest on the mountain.
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
- Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m
- Distance: 10 km
- Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
- Habitat: Rainforest
Descend through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you'll receive your summit certificate and celebrate your success.
