3-Day Mount Meru Itinerary

The 3-day Mount Meru trek offers a fast-paced yet scenic adventure up Tanzania’s second-highest mountain. Perfect for those with limited time or looking to acclimatize before climbing Kilimanjaro. This route passes through lush rainforest, open moorland, and dramatic ridgelines with views of Kilimanjaro and surrounding landscapes.

Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

• Elevation: 1,500m to 2,514m
• Distance: 10 km
• Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
• Habitat: Montane Forest

Begin your trek at Momella Gate with a gradual ascent through Arusha National Park. Keep an eye out for giraffes, buffalos, and colobus monkeys. Overnight at Miriakamba Hut.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

• Elevation: 2,514m to 3,570m
• Distance: 8 km
• Hiking Time: 3–5 hours
• Habitat: Heath and Moorland

A steeper hike today as you ascend through forest and moorland. After reaching Saddle Hut, you can optionally hike to Little Meru (3,820m) for acclimatization and sunset views. Overnight at Saddle Hut.

Day 3: Summit Attempt (Socialist Peak) & Descend

• Elevation: 3,570m to 4,566m (Summit) then down to 1,500m
• Distance: 19 km total
• Hiking Time: 10–12 hours
• Habitat: Alpine Desert to Montane Forest

Start your summit push early (around 2:00 AM) to reach Socialist Peak for sunrise. After celebrating at the top, descend back to Saddle Hut for a short rest, then continue all the way down to Momella Gate. Transfer back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi.
